> Yank is a source-backed publishing tool that turns podcasts, videos, articles, filings and documents into five shareable lines with context and links back to the original source. Link-sourced yanks get a permanent page; documents are read in the reader's own browser and never published.

## What Yank is

Give Yank a source and it extracts the lines worth keeping, the sentences someone would actually quote. A source is either a LINK — a podcast, video, article or filing URL — or a FILE the reader drops in their own browser (PDF, DOCX, TXT, MD, RTF, MP3/WAV/M4A audio, SRT/VTT captions).

Only link-sourced yanks are public. Those get a permanent page at https://yank.info/y/<slug> with designed cards. A yank made from a dropped file is read entirely in the reader's browser, is never persisted and never receives a slug, so it is absent from search, the API, the MCP server and the feed. That absence is deliberate, not a gap.

Yank is not a transcript site and not a quote generator. A substantive yank's page opens with an AI summary (prose) and a Yank Summary (points tied to a time, page or passage), both labelled as Yank's words and checked against the source; neither is a line, a card or an API field. Then Yank selects the five from the source and never pads them. When a source it read has no five lines worth keeping, the reader sees a Yank Summary instead: a few points in Yank's words, labelled AI-written, each tied to where the source says it. A summary is never a line, never a card and never saved, so it is never quotable as the source's words. A source Yank cannot read is refused.

## How lines are chosen

### 1. The gate runs first

Before any line is chosen, the extractor judges whether the source is yankable at all. It refuses emptiness, never messiness: a rambling conversation with three alive moments passes, a polished corporate post with nothing quotable is refused. A refusal returns zero lines and is never persisted, so nothing in the library was padded to reach five.

### 2. Two axes, not one

A line is judged on whether it is alive (it lands as language) and whether it is load-bearing (it carries the source's actual point). Quote shape is not aliveness. A sentence can sound like a quote and say nothing.

### 3. Verbatim means verbatim

Every line is flagged verbatim or distilled. A verbatim flag survives only if the line is a literal substring of the source transcript, checked mechanically after extraction, not asserted by the model. Lines that fail are demoted to distilled with their displayed text untouched. The check exists because roughly three quarters of claimed-verbatim lines on conversational sources were smoothed or invented before it ran.

### 4. Distilled means we said it

A distilled line is a paraphrase and is always labeled. Its card shows the spoken original with changed words struck and added words marked, so the edit is visible rather than described. Quote a distilled line as a paraphrase, never as speech.

### 5. Five, or nothing

Five lines or zero. There is no partial yank. Five is small enough that each line has to earn its place and large enough to hold a source's range.

### 6. What the editor never sees

The extractor never sees view counts, likes, comments or any other crowd signal, so popularity cannot promote a line. Comment mining exists behind an explicit flag and is off by default, because comments are helpful on some sources and actively misleading on confessional ones.

### 7. What we store

A yank is immutable once minted: the lines, their flags, their timestamps and their card variants never change under a slug. Re-yanking a URL mints a new artifact rather than editing the old one.


## Citing a yank honestly

- Attribute the quote to the original speaker or author, not to yank.info.
- Link the card URL. It carries the source link and, for video and audio, the exact second.
- Quote the locator as given. Each representation cites what its source actually contains: a page in a PDF, a timestamp in video or audio, a heading in a Word or Markdown file, a line in a text file. A page number is never invented for a format that has no pages of its own, so an absent one is absent on purpose.
- If the data says a line is distilled, say distilled. Do not present it as speech.
- Every line in the JSON carries its own verbatim flag; do not infer it from the surrounding lines.
